A new ASTM International standard will help to minimize the entrapment or crush hazard posed by motorized partitions when they are in motion. Such partitions, made up of a series of rigid panels that move along a motorized track, are used to provide flexibility in the size of spaces typically used for meetings, sports, and other functions where children are often present.

ASTM International’s consumer products committee (F15) has approved the new standard (F3660). The standard establishes performance specifications, test methods, and labeling requirements for motorized partitions. 

ASTM member Rachel Weintraub says anyone involved in the design and construction of new facilities will benefit from the specificity and clarity of the new standard. Such entities would include owner/operators, architects, planners, and more.

“People, especially children, who are in spaces with motorized partitions will benefit the most from the new standard because it will reduce the risk of death or injury from potential entrapment or crush hazards,” says ASTM member Rachel Weintraub. “The standard will assist owners and operators, such as schools, with safe installation, operation, and maintenance of the partitions.”
