Self-Adhesive Roofing

Self-adhesive roofing membranes have become popular because they combine the performance of proven modified bituminous compounds with easy application. To ensure product quality and performance for these products, ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing has developed a new standard.

D7530/D7530M, Specification for Self-Adhesive Glass Fiber Fabric Reinforced Polymer Modified Asphalt Steep Slope Roll Roofing Surfaced with Mineral Granules, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D08.02 on Steep Roofing Products and Assemblies.

"D7530 provides minimum requirements that will help define short- and long-term product performance for fiberglass mat reinforced self-adhesive membranes," says Husnu Kalkanoglu, vice president, R&D, for the roofing division of CertainTeed Corp., and a D08 member.

Kalkanoglu is chairman of the task group that developed D7530/D7530M as well as D1970, Specification for Self-Adhering Polymer Modified Bituminous Sheet Materials Used as Steep Roofing Underlayment for Ice Dam Protection, and D1670, Test Method for Failure End Point in Accelerated and Outdoor Weathering of Bituminous Materials. Kalkanoglu notes that all interested parties, particularly roofing manufacturers and product users, are encouraged to join the task group to help maintain these standards and develop new ones.
