A new ASTM standard defines and compiles commonly used terms in sustainable-manufacturing standards.

The new standard (E2987/E2987M, Terminology for Sustainable Manufacturing) will help members of ASTM's Subcommittee on Sustainable Manufacturing (part of Committee E60 on Sustainability) revise standards and develop new ones.

The subcommittee (E60.13) has already published a guide for evaluating the environmental aspects of sustainability of manufacturing processes. Several more proposed standards are in development on topics ranging from supply-chain sustainability to waste classification. These and other efforts will benefit from the new terminology provided by E2987/E2987M.

E60 is one of ten ASTM committees involved in the Smart Manufacturing Advisory Committee, a high-level group that meets regularly to discuss manufacturing advances, to collaborate on standards development, to explore new partnerships, and more.
