ASTM International’s geosynthetics committee (D35) has approved a new standard for the thermal fusion welding of geomembranes, which are used to control fluid migration in built projects, structures, and systems.

According to ASTM member Eddie Weiser, the new standard (soon to be published as D8580) will provide guidance on how thermal welding machinery is used to weld geomembrane liners.

“The new standard will give a comprehensive idea about welding machine requirements and best practices and conditions to produce quality welds,” says Weiser.

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #12 on responsible consumption and production.

“The new standard aims at improving the quality of welds for geomembrane liners,” says Weiser. “This will improve containment for landfills and water preservation.”
