Ensuring effective knowledge of underground assets and systems is essential for gas utility companies that are implementing plans to address regulatory initiatives and reporting requirements. A new ASTM International specification provides a comprehensive plan for tracking and tracing these assets.

The new standard, F2897, Specification for Tracking and Traceability Encoding System of Natural Gas Distribution Components (Pipe, Tubing, Fittings, Valves and Appurtenances), is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee F17.60 on Gas, part of ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.

According to Hitesh Patadia, principal, TEJ Group Inc., and an F17 member, F2897 provides the basis to codify key attributes of a given component in a discrete format and size to facilitate more effective tracking and traceability. The 16-digit code detailed in the standard contains information related to addressing who, what, when, where and how questions regarding the component.

"Specifically, the code consists of finite data sets that provide information, including manufacturer name, component characteristics (size, material type, component type) and product logistics (lot number, date of production)," says Patadia.

"The development of F2897 provides a path forward for manufacturers to mark their respective products in a uniform and standardized manner," says Patadia. "Gas utility companies can also use the standard to more effectively collect, store and query pertinent information to address recent reporting requirements and implement enhanced asset management initiatives within their operations."
