Unmanned Aircraft Design

ASTM International’s unmanned aircraft systems committee (F38) has approved a new standard that will provide a framework to certify large, unmanned aircraft systems to be operated alongside traditional manned aircraft in the national airspace system.

“This new standard will enable the use of unmanned aircraft cargo and will improve transportation of goods throughout the world,” says ASTM committee member Eric Peterson. “There are multiple unmanned air cargo aircraft in development and this standard will provide a means of compliance for certifying these aircraft.”

According to Peterson, manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and cargo companies will all find the new standard (F3563) useful in building and certifying aircraft. Additionally, consumers will benefit from more efficient product transportation.
