Woven Wire Filter Cloth Revision

ASTM International’s Committee on Particle and Spray Characterization (E29) is encouraging interested parties to participate in the revision of one of its standards, E2814, Guide for Industrial Woven Wire Filter Cloth.

E2814 covers the special grade of industrial woven wire cloth referred to as filter cloth, for general filtration including the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases), based on a desired pore size. Filter cloth, sometimes referred to as Dutch weave, can be made of any primary metal or metal alloy wire that is suitable for weaving, is produced in many specifications, and is commonly rated by its particle size retention capability. 

The current E2814 guide introduces standard terms and definitions, observes common technical considerations, and presents a mathematical model that can be used to predict the micron retention of a filter cloth specification. 

The goal of changing E2814 to a specification is to include acceptance criteria based on various potential tolerances and methods possibly including; mesh count and wire diameter tolerances, pore size as determined by bubble point test methods, pore size as determined by glass bead challenge testing, pore size predicated by mathematical geometric modeling, and pore size predicated by computer modeling methods.

E2814 is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee E29.01 on Sieves, Sieving Methods, and Screening Media. The ASTM Task Group for E2814 is soliciting anyone with an interest in woven wire filter cloth to participate in this effort.
